Racism Alive & Well

July 18, 2010

This entry is short but I think the topic is important.

In regards to Arizona’s immigration law, I can only say it is an outrage.  I am saddened and upset that a state would pass such a law.  Having researched and produced two documentaries that discuss the United State’s (and Oregon’s) history in dealing with non-U.S. citizens living and working in this country, I’m shocked that Arizona would actually put such oppressive laws into place.

However, I’m not surprised about what Arizona put into place.  I personally know many people who think that the immigrants from south of the border are taking up jobs that we should have, not paying taxes, and so on.  Racism and prejudice, whether personal or institutionalized, remains entrenched in this country.  The passing of the immigration laws in Arizona only validates what many people in this country think and feel.
